Common Sense,
Uncommon Results.
Building and maintaining an investment portfolio
involves critical decisions which should never be made lightly.
As a private investment firm, T.B.K. does not act as a financial
planner or investment advisor to the general public. However, the
principles we employ on behalf of our clients can serve as a good
guideline for developing a winning investment strategy. We hope
this brief introduction to T.B.K. will tell you a little more about
us while helping you develop a winning investment philosophy
Where does the buck stop?
Many large investment firms feature a frequently
changing cast of characters.
Investment advisors, portfolio managers, and administrators come
and go. At T.B.K. we believe the people you place your trust (and
your hard earned money) with in the first place should be the ones
in charge of your portfolio. As a private firm, all of our accounts
are personally managed by the founder and president, H. Robb Levinsky.
Assisted by a small core of capable support staff, Robb takes charge
of every investment decision made on behalf of our clients. The
best money managers would rather devote themselves to building and
maintaining solid, mutually productive long-term relationships with
a few select clients than to marketing their services. A focus on
managing money instead of seeking new business leaves more time
to concentrate on fundamental research.
Diversification with Focus...
A diversified portfolio of investments can reduce
short-term fluctuation and limit overall risk. An excellent way
to invest in stocks and bonds is through quality mutual funds and/or
Exchange Traded Funds with low expense ratios and proven long-term
track records. The best mutual funds offer expert management and
extensive research capabilities beyond the reach of the vast majority
of individual investors. By utilizing a core holding of carefully
researched and actively monitored mutual funds combined with a select
group of individual stocks, real estate, and alternative investments,
an investor can maximize the potential returns while limiting risk
through true diversification.
A contrarian approach to investing...
In our experience, successful investors rarely
run with the crowd in what they do or how they do it. A contrarian
approach to investments means that when others are chasing the latest
hot sector (often paying a huge premium for questionable stocks
in the process), those with the courage of their convictions are
looking for solid, profitable companies with strong fundamentals
and real long-term value that are often ignored or out of fashion
at the time. We think it makes more sense to sell at inflated prices
when everyone is climbing aboard, and wait for more opportune moments
to buy. Ignoring short-term hype and having the courage of your
convictions produces the kind of long-term results investors are
looking for.
Working with an advisor...
Many advisors are quick to suggest investments
that result in generous commissions, but ask them how much of their
own money is invested in what they are selling and you’ll
probably get silence as a reply. It’s our philosophy that
people who believe in what they are selling should put their money
where their mouth is and invest in what they recommend to their
clients. A good advisor who is compensated on an hourly basis, or
for producing specific, pre-determined results can be a worthwhile
investment. However, we feel advisors should never work on a commission
basis, so you can be sure their agenda is producing results, not
commissions. Look for long-term, mutually profitable business relationships
built on trust, common goals, and an exceptional level of personal
attention to investments and clients alike.
